Anne Arundel County Fire Department Announces Promotions

(Millersville, MD) - Twenty-eight members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department were recognized last week for being promoted to the Ranks of Deputy Chief, Division Chief, Battalion Chief, Captain and Lieutenant within the Department.  At the formal promotional ceremony, Fire Chief Allan C. Graves recognized these personnel for their years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.

(Millersville, MD) For the 72 hour period beginning at midnight on Friday, May 6^th through Sunday, May 8^th, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to 683 incidents.

Incidents of Media Interest Since Midnight

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Odenton

Two people have been seriously injured in an auto accident this morning on Piney Orchard Parkway in Odenton. Around 6:55 this morning firefighters responded to the area of Piney Orchard Parkway and Sandy Walk Way for an auto accident with reported occupants trapped. Firefighters arrived to locate a two-vehicle accident with both vehicles off the roadway and two patients trapped in one of the vehicles. The trapped patient in the first vehicle, a 20-year-old female, was extricated in about 20 minutes and then transported by paramedics to Shock Trauma with serious, but not believed life-threatening injuries. The driver of the first vehicle, a 50-year-old female, was extricated by firefighters about 10 minutes later. A Maryland State Police helicopter was requested for her, and it landed near the scene. She was transported by helicopter to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening. The adult female driver of the second vehicle was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

The department responded to 217 incidents (daily average is 220). There were no incidents of media interest.

The department responded to 225 incidents.

Injured Person                                              Severna Park

One person has been severely injured after being struck by a falling tree limb Saturday evening in Severna Park. Around 7:20 p.m. firefighters responded to a reported injured person in the 200 block of North Drive. Firefighters found a 42-year-old male patient who was part of a work crew removing a tree. Witnesses reported that while the worker was in the tree, a large limb fell and struck him. He was able to lower himself to the ground where he was aided by his coworkers until firefighters and paramedics arrived. The patient was transported by paramedics to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life threatening. The incident was reported to Maryland Occupational Safety and Health for investigation.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Arnold

One person was critically injured in a motor vehicle collision on Ritchie Highway Saturday afternoon. Just after 4:50 p.m. firefighters responded to a reported motor vehicle accident in the area of Ritchie Highway South and Joyce Lane West. Arriving firefighters located a single vehicle accident with the driver and sole occupant trapped. Witness reported to paramedics that the vehicle was traveling south on Ritchie Highway when it struck a curb, and then rolled several times before hitting a fire hydrant and a tree. The driver, a 22-year-old male, was extricated from the vehicle in about 25 minutes. A Maryland State Police helicopter was requested and landed at the Anne Arundel Community College. Paramedics transported the patient to the landing site, and the State Police helicopter transported the patient to Shock Trauma with critical possibly life-threatening injuries.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Linthicum

The operator of a motorcycle was transported to Shock Trauma following a single vehicle accident Saturday morning on Route 695 in Linthicum. Firefighters responded to a reported accident involving a motorcycle just after 7:00 a.m. in the area of Route 695 East and the ramp for Route 295 South. The 65-year-old male operator was transported by paramedics to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening as a result of the unwitnessed accident.

The department responded to 241 incidents.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Davidsonville

One person has been severely injured in an auto accident in Davidsonville Friday evening. Just after 6:30 p.m. firefighters responded for an auto accident in the 3400 block of Riva Road, near Governor Bridge Road. Firefighters located a two-vehicle, head-on accident. The driver of one vehicle, a 33-year-old male, was transported by paramedics to the Trauma Center at Prince George’s Hospital Center with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening. The driver of the second vehicle, a 40-year-old male, was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Maryland City

One person was seriously injured in an early morning motor vehicle collision on Route 295 in Maryland City. Just before 3:30 a.m. firefighters responded to the area of Route 295 South near Route 198. Arriving units located a single vehicle accident where the vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed and overturned, ejecting the driver and lone occupant. The 25-year-old male patient was transported by paramedics to the Trauma Center at Prince George’s Hospital Center with injuries that were reported to be serious but not believed life-threatening.

Incidents of Media Interest Since Midnight

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Deale

Four people were injured in an early morning auto accident on Solomons Island Road in Deale. Just before 1:00 a.m. firefighters responded to the area of Solomons Island Road and Old Solomons Island Road for an auto accident. Arriving firefighters located a single vehicle accident during which the vehicle had left the roadway and overturned, coming to rest on its roof approximately 30 feet from the road. Two passengers had been able to remove themselves from the vehicle. However, the driver and driver side rear seat passenger were both trapped. Both of the trapped patients were extricated by firefighters in about 25 minutes. Helicopters were not available due to weather conditions. Therefore, paramedics transported the 25-year-old female driver and the 24-year old male driver side rear seat passenger to the Trauma Center at Prince George’s Hospital Center with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening. The 24-year-old male front seat passenger and 26-year-old male passenger side rear seat passenger were both transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Pedestrian Struck                                          Edgewater

A pedestrian has been severely injured after being hit by a car Tuesday night in Edgewater. Just after 9:20 p.m. firefighters responded to a reported pedestrian struck in the area of southbound Solomons Island Road near the intersection of Mayo Road. Arriving firefighters located a 24-year-old female with serious injuries. A Maryland State Police helicopter was requested and landed at Lee Airport. Paramedics treated the patient and transported her to the landing site from where she was transported by helicopter to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening.

(Millersville, MD) For the 72 hour period beginning at midnight on Friday, April 29^th through Sunday, May 1^st, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to 655 incidents.

Incidents of Media Interest Since Midnight

Garage Fire                                                   Severn

Fire Investigators are seeking information from the public following an early morning fire in Severn. Around 1:15 this morning a resident called 911 reporting a structure on fire in the area of Donaldson Avenue and Clark Station Road. Firefighters arrived in the 7800 block of Clark Station Road where they located an approximately 20x40 foot, two-story detached garage fully involved in fire. The fire in the vacant building was brought under control in 15 minutes by 40 firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Fort Meade, and BWI Thurgood Marshal Airport. There were no injuries. Members of the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit have determined that the fire, which caused an estimated $40,000 in damage, is incendiary in nature. Anyone with information, photographs or videos are encouraged to call the anonymous tips line at 410-222-TIPS or go to the arson tips website.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                Crofton

One person was transported to Shock Trauma following an auto accident on Route 3 in Crofton Saturday afternoon. Just after 3:45 p.m. firefighters responded to the 1100 block of Route 3 North, near Lee Street and Queen Mitchell Road, for a reported auto accident with a vehicle overturned and occupant ejected. Arriving units located a single vehicle accident with witness reports that the vehicle left the roadway at a high rate of speed, rolled over several times and ejected the driver. The 20-year-old male driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was transported by paramedics to Shock Trauma with possibly serious injuries.

The department responded to 244 incidents.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision                      Glen Burnie

One person was killed in an auto accident in Glen Burnie Friday afternoon. Around 3:40 p.m. firefighters responded to the area of Dorsey Road and Aviation Boulevard, near the State Police barracks, for a reported auto accident. Arriving firefighters located a two-vehicle accident with a driver trapped. The trapped driver and lone occupant of one vehicle, a 66-year-old female, was declared deceased on the scene. The driver of the second vehicle, a 31-year-old male initially declined transport to the hospital. Firefighters returned to the scene an hour later and transported him to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with minor injuries. The Maryland State Police have issued a press release with additional details on the incident.

LODD Anniversary- Chief Edwin E. Raynor

Today marks the anniversary of the May 1, 1986, line of duty death of Chief Edwin E. Raynor of the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company. 

Chief Edwin E. Raynor

Chief Raynor suffered a massive heart attack while fighting a brush fire in Pasadena on April 1, 1986.  He was transported to the hospital where he remained until his death.  Chief Raynor was a well-known and respected instructor at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute and a Veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II.

Please take an opportunity today to think about Chief Raynor and the other 18 firefighters who have died while protecting the citizens of Anne Arundel County.  We will never forget.
