MILLERSVILLE, Md. - For the 24 hour period beginning at midnight on Wednesday, June 29^th the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to 235 incidents (daily average is 220).

Incidents of Media Interest Wednesday, June 29^th:

Motor Vehicle Incident                                             Arnold

One person received serious injuries Wednesday morning when a tree struck the passenger bus he was operating. Firefighters responded to the area of Ritchie Highway South and Chautaugua Road just after 7:15 a.m. for the reports of a tree which had fallen on a bus with a person trapped. Arriving firefighters found a 15-passemger bus which had been struck by a tree while it was traveling south on Ritchie Highway. The driver was trapped, and two passengers were complaining of minor injuries. Firefighters worked for about 35 minutes to free the driver, a 57-year-old male. He was treated by paramedics and then transported to a waiting Maryland State Police helicopter which had landed at a nearby church. The patient was transported by helicopter to Shock Trauma with injuries that were serious but not believed life threatening. The two patients with minor injuries were transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center by paramedics. There were no other occupants on passengers on the bus and no other vehicles involved.

There will be a media event this morning for the announcement of a grant from Baltimore Gas and Electric to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to provide smoke alarms to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department and Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department.

A vehicle collision early Tuesday morning seriously injured one person in Deale. Around 1:20 a.m. firefighters responded to the 5500 block of Deale Churchton Road for a vehicle collision. Firefighters located a single vehicle accident in which a pickup truck struck a tree. The 22-year-old female and lone occupant of the vehicle was transported by paramedics to the Trauma Center at Prince George’s Hospital with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.

BGE Grant to NFFF to Provide Smoke Alarms to Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Fire Departments

MILLERSVILLE, Md. - The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) knows the value of working 10-year smoke alarms.  Not only do smoke alarms provide an early warning to residents of a fire in their home, but they also allow for a faster notification to the Fire Department.  The sooner firefighters can arrive and extinguish a home fire the better the chances that no one will be injured or killed.  While the NFFF honors our fallen firefighters, they also do their very best to prevent Line of Duty Deaths.

Baltimore Gas & Electric annually donates thousands of dollars to local charities through their “Emergency Response and Safety Grants.”  This year the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was awarded a BGE Grant to purchase smoke alarms to be distributed to the Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County Fire Departments.  The two departments have programs where firefighters will install these smoke alarms in homes free of charge.

The NFFF has established a special relationship with KIDDE, a leading manufacturer of smoke alarms, to allow for discounted pricing and donated alarms.  The combination of a BG&E Grant and KIDDE’s generosity means that Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County will have additional 10-year smoke alarms to distribute, free of charge, to their residents, courtesy of the NFFF.

All of the organizations mentioned above will gather to announce the Grant amount and number of smoke alarms to be distributed.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                            Deale

An early morning motor vehicle collision seriously injured one person in Deale. Around 1:20 this morning firefighters responded to the 5500 block of Deale Churchton Road for a vehicle collision. Fireworks Injury                                                       Lake Shore

Members of the Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit are investing an incident involving fireworks that injured a 19-year-old male in Lake Shore Monday evening. Investigators were notified by the Emergency Department at Baltimore Washington Medical Center that they were treating a patient injured by fireworks. Investigators proceeded to the hospital to interview the patient. The investigation has revealed that the patient and a friend were using ground-based sparklers, which had been purchased in Anne Arundel County, on a community pier. One of the devices malfunctioned and exploded in the face of the patient, injuring both of his eyes. The patient was driven to BWMC by his friend. BWMC referred the patient to the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was treated at Wilmer and released early this morning with no apparent permanent eye damage but with concussive damage to his ears. The incident remains under investigation.

Despite federal and state regulations on the type of fireworks available for sale to the general public, even those fireworks that are sold legally carry an elevated risk of personal injury.  For example, sparklers, which are legal in the majority of states, burn at temperatures nearing 1200°F. Their colorful sparks distract from the potential dangers. In a 2013 report on fireworks, the NFPA reported that "89% of the fireworks injuries treated in hospital emergency rooms involved fireworks that Federal regulations permit consumers to use.”

Bicyclist Struck                                                          Glen Burnie

Paramedics transported a 68-year-old female bike rider to Shock Trauma Monday morning after she collided with an auto in Glen Burnie. Firefighters responded to the incident in the area of Dorsey Road and Aviation Boulevard around 8:30 Monday morning. Witnesses reported to paramedics that the operator rode into the side of a moving auto. The patient was transported with injuries that were serious but not believed life-threatening.

Injured Person                                                          Friendship

A patient was flown to Shock Trauma Monday morning after falling off a horse in Friendship. Just after 8:05 a.m. firefighters responded to the 7000 block of Old Solomons Island Road for an injured person. Firefighters located a 53-year-old female with injuries sustained after falling from a horse. A Maryland State Police helicopter was requested and landed at the scene. The patient was transported by helicopter with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries.

Bicyclist Struck                                                          Pasadena

Paramedics transported a bicyclist to Shock Trauma early this morning after an auto struck him in Pasadena. Firefighters responded to the incident in the area of Mountain Road and Jumpers Hole Road just before 3:30 this morning. The 15-year-old male patient was transported with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries.

Motor Vehicle Collision                                            Pasadena

Paramedics transported the operator of a motorcycle to Shock Trauma Sunday afternoon following a collision on Mountain Road. Just after 1:00 p.m. firefighters responded to the 4600 block of Mountain Road, near the Angels Food Market for a reported vehicle collision involving a motorcycle. Firefighters arrived and found a two vehicle accident between a motorcycle and a pickup truck. The 26-year-old male operator of the motorcycle was transported to Shock Trauma with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries.

Shooting                                                                     Crownsville

Paramedics transported one person to Shock Trauma following a shooting Sunday morning in Crownsville. Firefighters responded to the incident in the 1000 block of Shore View Circle around 1:45 a.m. A 20-year-old male was transported with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision                                  Gambrills

A motor vehicle collision killed the operator of a motorcycle on Route 3 Saturday night in Gambrills. Just after 11:30 p.m. firefighters responded to the area of Route 3 South and Capitol Raceway Road for a collision involving a motorcycle. Firefighters located a collision between a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle. The 29-year-old male operator of the motorcycle was declared deceased at the scene after efforts to resuscitate him were not successful. The Anne Arundel County Police have released additional information on the incident.

Injured Person                                                          Chesapeake Bay near Sandy Point

A boating incident seriously injured a 62-year-old female near Sandy Point on Saturday evening. Just after 6:00 p.m. firefighters responded to Sandy Point State Park for an injured person. The Maryland Natural Resources Police advise that the patient was one of four people on a boat that struck wake about a mile off the mouth of the Magothy River. The patient was thrown from her seat, and she struck the side of the boat with her head hitting the gunwale. Paramedics requested a Maryland State Police helicopter which landed at Sandy Point and transported the patient to Shock Trauma with critical possibly life-threatening injuries.

The department responded to 256 incidents.

Injured Person                                                          Glen Burnie

Paramedics transported one person to Shock Trauma Friday night following an assault in Glen Burnie. Just before midnight, firefighters responded to the 1000 block of Bell Avenue for an injured person. Arriving personnel located a 16-year-old female who witnesses reported had been assaulted by a group. She was transported to Shock Trauma with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries.

(Millersville, MD) For the 24 hour period beginning at midnight on Thursday, June 23^rd the Anne Arundel County Fire Department responded to 223 incidents (daily average is 220).

Incidents of Media Interest Thursday, June 23rd:

Departmental Motor Vehicle Collision        Severn

Two firefighters injured in a motor vehicle collision Thursday evening in Severn have been released from Shock Trauma. Around 7:00 p.m., the Basic Life Support ambulance from the Harmans/Dorsey Fire Station was responding to a medical emergency in the Severn area when it was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Route 170 (Telegraph Road) under Route 100. The two firefighters, a 36-year old male who was the driver and the 31-year-old male front seat passenger, were the only two occupants of the ambulance and were both injured. Paramedics transported them to Shock Trauma with serious, non-life threatening injuries. There were no other injuries requiring hospital transport as a result of the collision.

The Department would like to express appreciation to several unidentified citizens who stopped at the scene of the accident and assisted our personnel from their damaged vehicle. This group included a nurse who rendered medical care to the two firefighters until the arrival of additional firefighters and paramedics.

Incidents of Media Interest Tuesday, June 21st:

Bicyclist Struck                                              Gambrills

A 72-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured on Tuesday morning after a motorcycle struck his bike on Defense Highway. Around 8:50 a.m. firefighters responded to the area of Route 450 (Defense Highway) near Huntwood Drive for a motor vehicle collision involving a bicycle. Based on information from the initial 911 callers, a Maryland State Police helicopter was requested with the initial fire department response. Witnesses reported to arriving firefighters that the patient was riding his bike when his rear wheel was struck by a motorcycle, throwing the patient several feet from his bike. He was wearing a helmet. Paramedics transported the patient to the helicopter landing site at Bell Branch Park, and he was flown to Shock Trauma with serious but not believed life-threatening injuries. Information is not available regarding whether the operator of the motorcycle remained on the scene.
